Good question Robin, i am curious too. I unfortunately never make my own cor reeds, oboe reeds are enough trouble to cope with!
On a side note, i find that if you make the tip of a cor reed too thin, the coarse crow which i understand very well will go away, so does a scrape that is too long, and a reed that is too closed. But what other reasons may cause that remains a mystery to me. At one point i had a similar problem with my oboe reeds Robin.
