Lois, the only thing I know besides what you have already mentioned would be to squeeze the reed closed a bit. That will make it sharper, but depending on the opening, could also kinda choke it off.

Maybe this is the time to teach your students the fine art of playing in tune on the reed they have, rather than the reed they wish they had! By which I mean, tell them to play up higher on the reed to get sharper, further back toward the tip to get flatter. When playing with others -- especially flutes -- you just have to be able to accomodate.

No one in an ensemble is going to be impressed when you explain to them how perfectly at pitch you are playing when you aren't in tune with the rest of the group!
