I teach young students age 9 to 17 and they often find the finished reeds they buy to be flat. Nearly all those marked "soft" are flat, so I start them on a medium-soft . I've tried many brands and reedmakers, and at this time of the year the reeds are often 15 cents flat--even expensive hand made reeds by reputable makers. Students often do not have the breath support and air speed to play them up to pitch. If clipping the tip doesn't raise the pitch adequately, are there other places to scrape to help?
Slipping the blades is a temporary measure but the reed usually dries back to its original shape and pitch.
Does warm, humid weather tend to make the pitch higher than the cold dry air of winter?
Since I like to accompany their solos on a 440 tuned piano and to play duets with them it is a problem. Any suggestions? Lois Barton
