 Re: flat ready- made reeds

Thanks for all your advice. I will try getting them to play further down on the reed, altho current wisdom seems to suggest playing out as far as possible on the tip. To answer your question, Robin, I have played oboe and English Horn for 60 years in college and community orchestras and woodwind quintets, know how to make reeds, and made all my own for quite a few years. Just don't have time to make them for the kids--- so am always looking for sources of in-tune, well made reeds at a price my mostly middle-class students can afford. I just don't like to have to spend tons of my time to re-cut them but refuse to let them play grossly out of tune.
I find that with constant attention to intonation from the first lesson, they soon develop a good ear and play musch better in tune than most young oboists. (Several of them have been invited to play in local community college orchestras while still in high school.) I may explore the possibility of requesting reed makers to make them a little bit sharp for the kids who have not yet developed the embouchure and breath support. Then we fight the battle of them being sharp when they have been playing a few years and the effects of high school band's sharp trumpets and their own nerves tend to make them play too high! Lois
