Hi Paula!
I have heard that ten hours of playing time is a good average, but in my experience, it varies madly. Some reeds are good for 10 hours of playing or so. Others just won't seem to give up.
I have had reeds that I thought were goners come back to life, so to speak, after being "rested" for periods of time. When I discovered this phenomenon, I began a habit of not discarding any reeds, but just putting them in a box in a drawer of my cabinet. When I find myself short, I go back through the box and see if any of them are any good.
I think what sometimes also happens here is that reeds which I didn't like so much (and thus didn't play very much) get put into the box, and then when I come back to them later, either my own abilities have improved, or I am desperate enough to be willing to work on a not-great reed to make it playable.
At any rate, the best answer is that there is no real hard and fast answer to your question!
