I'm going to be near Atlanta to visit my sister in law. I was wondering if anyone ever sent their oboe to Pat McFarland for repairs or an overhaul. I figure if I'm going to be out there I may consider giving him a try. I'm also not too far from Toronto and I was wondering about Gary Armstrong. I live in New York State, but the instrument repair people I know in NYS live closer to NY City. This is a 6 1/2 hour drive for me. I could of course send my oboe. Does anyone have any thoughts on either of these repairmen or could maybe make a recommendation? I don't think I need a complete overhaul, but I do need some things done. I had to use my spare oboe for a concert as it worked better than my newer oboe.

I've never had Pat McFarland do any work for me, but I know his reputation is excellent. He's very knowledgeable about both oboe and English horn, and has written one of the most popular available guides to adjusting the oboe.
In New York City, I could highly, highly recommend Margaret Noble of OboeWorks http://www.oboeworks.com/. I routinely send my oboe to her (UPS). She is a wonderful communicator, quick worker, and top-drawer technician. You have to schedule time for your instrument to be with her -- she is booked in advance.

Thanks Ohsuzan,
I was also wondering about Brian Seaton. I believe he apprenticed with Margaret at oboeworks?

Hi Sheryl,
I would highly recommend Brian Seaton. He recently moved to the Kitchener-Waterloo area (in Ontario) and I know he isn't terribly busy right now. This is his website: http://www.oboehouse.com/contact.html. He should be getting his new address and phone number here in the next week.
I hope that helps!

kscoboe,
Kitchener/Waterloo? Really? I did consider him, but the website has an Alabama (I think) address.

I don't have any advice for repairs out east, but if you can take the oboe (rather than mail it) that would be far preferrable! Everything is at least 6 hours away from where I live, but I'd make it a road trip and have a great time. If you have to send it one way, make it the first leg and go pick it up in person. Good luck!
