 Re: unusual key

I've often thought that an alternate low-C key would be useful for the LEFT thumb as opposed to the right. It would have the benefit of (a) being a better solution in the low register than a low-B to low-C link in that it keeps the low-B and low-Bb keys unencumbered for upper register use, and (b) replacing the banana key, which is difficult to use for some of us.

The key could be positioned where the Italian alternate low-B is now placed (for a good picture go to http://www.patricola.it/ and select “Oboes 2009” -> “PT.3 S6 Evoluzione”).

Has anybody heard of such a key actually being implemented?

I think it would be quite difficult to do (having wasted far too much practice time trying to figure it out!), and could add some weight. As a retrofit I imagine you would toss out the banana key and engage the low-C mechanism in its place. But you would have to jump the low-B/Bb rod, and the connecting links would have to get past the extended-F key posts without getting in the way of large right thumbs. You’d also have to traverse the middle joint.

Is this a dumb idea? Or just impossible to build?

Cheers
Gerry
