The ring finger is often quite a weak finger, and your control of it may be poorer than your other fingers. This is definitely true for me, at any rate!

You can buy squashy exercise balls in any store that sells orthopedic aids. They are graded in stiffness. Get a soft ball, and practice squashing it between your ring finger and your thumb. You should feel a difference after a few days.

You may still need to do the Eb key extension, if your fingers are as short as you say.
