FWIW, I tend to like shorter tips, too.
I have one reed that I have been playing for about six months now that was very flat at the outset. To get it up to pitch, I had to clip the the tip back so far that I was sure it was ruined. The tip is barely a stub. It is a remarkably ugly-looking reed. But for whatever reason, this reed has been one of the best I've played. I've used it in public, and gotten very positive feedback for my playing on it. And it is apparently ageless -- as good (or better) today than it was when it was new.
Reeds have minds of their own.
