Re: Short Tip vs Long Tip Reed

I talk about the gouge as well because i find it indispensable in relation to the contruction of the tip. Not all cane can yield a reed with a short/long tip. Yes and i am talking about a European style short scraped reed. But of course there are exceptions to everything. The Dutch long scrape reed has a less defined tip that tapers evenly to the edge of the tip and is meant to be played with a relaxed embouchure just as an American scrape, but this reed does not overlap nor does it have windows!

I find that my reed style changes according to the situation of my piece of cane. Unless there is a complete consistency in cane i find it hard to simply always make a reed with a short/long tip.

It seems that your comment on the opening of the reed applies to me as well, but i suspect that the gouge plays a big role here. Usually i use a short tip on a thinner gouge, and thinner gouges tend to yield less open reeds anyways. Considering a same batch of cane of consistent quality, i find that the construction of the tip will affect the opening by adjustment of the middle of the end of the tip (the thickest part on a long scrape if there is a step into the heart?). The heavier the step the more open the reed and the less defined the heart to tip blend the less open the reed is.
