 Re: Marigaux vs. Loree

"If you could afford it, you could have both instruments, but that would mean perhaps practicing on both of them so that you don't just get used to one and then don't play the other one very well..."

I plan to keep the Loree for a year or so as the Marigaux breaks in - especially for those cold days here in the NYC metro region.

In the long run - I probably will not keep both instruments. This is why:

1) The ergonomics are slightly different - especially the C, C# Eb keywork.
On the Loree the C# is slightly raised. The Bb, B, Eb keywork feels a little tighter.

2) The above octave staff Eb on this Marigaux requires an alternate fingering. Top joint - open B #2 #3 and third octave key. (It is actually friendlier and easier - and I learned some other fingerings too.)

3) My Loree reeds which have a lot of sound built in - are not optimal for the Marigaux. The instrument rings more with a more flexible and lighter reed.

4) And of course the response is different in both instruments.

So the approaches to the two instruments are not the same and I don't really want to make two set of reeds!

On a pleasant note - I received an this email.

Dear Mark,

Congratulations for your choice, I am sure you will be a happy "official
Marigaux player" !

Bonne continuation !

Not too shabby ........................... a nice personal touch.

When I really get into reed making for the Marigaux - I will open a thread and share my observations.

My you all find the perfect reed!

Mark
