Just keep after it, eventually your ratio of good reeds will rise and win.
I do not use a cane hardness gauge - I just bend the cane over my finger after gouging and before shaping and to get a feel for the hardness/softness. Also the first few scrapes generally give me an idea of that I am dealing with. You can learn to read your cane that way and save a few $$.
No profiler here either. Just intense concentration and a sharp knife to get to the clipping stage in 5 minutes.
Once you make the initial investment in your equipment, the cost reduces each time you use it :-) Hang in there.
