I have no interest in either purchasing or maintaining those pieces of equipment. I simply try to buy my cane shaped and gouged from a reputable seller, and I always ask my local oboe guru about what he recommends.
I have used old cane, new cane, soft cane, hard cane, and while I have preferences I still hold to my teacher's instruction: scrape the cane so the reed plays.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can use a variety of cane but still get good results. My reed box is full of good to great reeds; I just take my sweet time in finishing them.
Hope that brings 'poor' you some encouragement.
