I STILL think, everybody, that there are really good oboes and not-so-good oboes, and while everyone has their brand-name preference, really good instruments will be valued and cared for by their owners/players.
I personally am not a 'Loree' kinda gal, can't get my style of playing and/or reed-making to work on that brand (for ME). I've played lesser known brands and like some of them very much (a Jarde, an MCW, and one 'anonymous' oboe with no brand marking at all). I would LOVE to own a Rigoutat but the one I tried was terrible -- perhaps very out of adjustment?-- and I'm fond of my Fossati.
Every individual oboe is a wee bit different.
So, once again, I suggest that you can get a 'gem' or a 'lemon' from any brand out there, which is why it is SO VERY IMPORTANT TO TRY any instrument you are considering buying.
