Re: Question about Italian made oboes - and others

I cannot speak from experience about the professional models but have tried Fox, Patricola, and Bulgheroni in their simplest student models, which include left side F. Using blind test where both I and a student will play same 8 measure passage on several different oboes of comparable price range the Bulgheroni has consistently been the one of choice. In the last 8 years students have bought 5 Bulgheronis and had very good luck with them, mechanically and otherwise. My feeling is that they are not quite as resonant for professional level , full orchestral playing as the Loree and Laubins--but they cost less than half as much. For high school , college and serious adult players they are quite satisfactory. I play a Laubin myself, own a Loree, and would not feel hampered by playing a student Bulgheroni in any situations I might encounter as a serious amateur who plays in two community symphonies, a woodwind quintet and chamber ensembles. Beware though of trying instruments that may not be in correct adjustment. Unfortunately not all suppliers have their instruments carefully adjusted--even at the IDRS meetings. I have not had any problem with the Bulgheronis playing up to standard 440 pitch , the low notes speak easily and the tone is lovely.
