 Re: Used Laubin

I can take a stab at oboeTX's query re: comparison between Loree and laubin. I played Loree for many years, and switched to Laubin (and eventually switched to Marigaux). TCaveat: the differences are all subjective.
Loree has what I call a 'French' sound -- there is a particularly penetrating nasal quality on some notes. Different instruments and different bores can produce a great range in 'darkness' or 'brightness', but I found that on all of my Lorees (I had 4) in the second octave the sound quality changed and narrowed. I struggled to find a reed which would diminish that narrowing. Others might find that second octave sound desirable. The very low notes always had a brash quality to them to my taste. The keywork was always magnificent on the Lorees. Almost all of my Loree top joints eventually cracked.
My Laubin had a much more even and full sound top to bottom. The low notes spoke easliy without any brashness, and the upper notes, while still narrower than the lower ones, had more fullness. I found it much easier to make a reed for the Laubin. Some notes which had always been sharp on my various Lorees (second octave E, F#, G, for example) were more in tune, though the second octave Eflat was flat. I had more trouble with the mechanism of the Laubin; it needed more repair and adjustment. Before every rehearsal I seemed to need to adjust the lever which holds the F# key closed when pressing the G#. The top joint (plastic liner) never cracked. There was no third octave key or low Bflat resonance key, but neither seemed to be needed.
I think the main difference is truly one of taste. Both instruments could fill a large concert hall and penetrate the orchestral texture around me.
