I'm wondering if maybe the original owner was an amateur who had it custom-made "because he/she could," (i.e. was flush with cash) and whose fortunes have rapidly reversed in the last few months of financial turmoil.

I originally thought it would be a nice looker, with a crappy tone, but Mr. Charles seems pretty enthusiastic in his assessment of the playing qualities of the instruments.
