at the great risk of seriously offending 'anguish horn' devotees, have to cautiously admit to not particularly liking this member of the oboe family myself, the instrument's timbre sounds mostly dark, murky and hang-dog forlorn to me, like weary peat bog laborers or like November rainy weather for days on end
think somebody once commented that the cor needs a major redesign and why isn't it being done yet?
the player has to hold it mostly vertical and hardly has any space under the bell when seated, so have to wonder, where's that bulbous bell's blob of sound going but splat on the floor under everybody's chairs?
in contrast that similar design bulbous bell manages to make the shorter d'amore sound absolutely gorgeous, which can be held at a higher angle too, but the bulbous bell doesn't seem to do anything good for cor at all
one concert i went to the player came up front to do Swan of Tuonela and methinks that was a smart move, could hear it much better up front than embedded behind the cellos
curiosity question - does it play louder or better in upper register with the bell off?
