When I first started learning the oboe my teacher used to bring his cor along to lessons from time to time. He would get me to play a phrase on the cor and then immediately afterwards the same phrase on the oboe. The difference in my oboe tone was amazing (but unfortunately didn't last). I never really understood why playing the cor immediately prior to the oboe should make such a difference (my teacher said something about it making my throat more open) but it really was impressive.
I was disappointed a year or so later to discover that it had lost its "magic" effect - my teacher just laughed and said it was because my oboe playing had improved.
The loss of "magic" didn't stop me buying my own cor last year and although the effect is no longer immediately perceptible I think playing the cor is beneficial for my oboe playing.
