If the conductor asks for bar number during a rehearsal, and the parts don't have bar numbers, generally about half the group will start calling to the conductor that they have no bar numbers, and s/he will then use a different method of telling you where to start (like, five measures before letter B;) s/he wants you to be in the right place so that the group can rehearse. Of course I play in groups where the vast majority of people are well into middle-age, and who are not shy about speaking up.
I've also been in rehearsals where the conductor takes ten minutes to have everyone write in rehearsal etters at specific places in the music, because the music has none and it would involve way too much counting to find the spots needed to rehearse, using a lot more time overall than the ten minutes needed to put the letters in.
Very best bet is to look at the score (don't be shy about asking, at break or after the rehearsal) and just get the numbers in your part.
