OK hautboys & gals -- thanks for input so far -- for those of you interested ...
Here's my tongue-in-cheeky 'technical' F report (yawn ...) from my weekend practice on this particular Yamaha with one OK medium blown-in reed, well-rested and energetic player, using Korg tuner (Borg Kube) as guideline
Middle F's
1. forked with either Eb key - resonant, a bit #, easily centred
2. standard F key - resonant, a bit b, easily centred
3. Left F key - same as standard -- have to play from E only, hopelessly stuffy if leave D closed
4. forked, no Eb key - not bad, a bit muted, but sharper than with Eb key
Top F's
1. forked with either Eb key - bright, but # -- needs softer embouchure
2. standard F key - surprise! - it's a bit stuffy, harder to centre, and boosted air pressure doesn't brighten resonance to equal Top E tone (Top G's also a bit stuffy, G#'s bright)
3. Left F key - again stuffy & b; again have to play from E only, high D to left F key is totally stuffy and useless (and yes, half-hole was rolled shut & 1st 8ve was open, and yes 2nd 8ve was shut)
4. forked, no Eb key - bright, but not so resonant as with Eb key, and mucho #
Harmonic Hi-F - can't get it yet, Borg said it was too-sharp E ...!
End of (yawn...) report
Practical working hypothesis -- my actual attitude is ... ignore all that nonsense for now ... just make the best F choice for the music being played ... and test it all again next year when I'm a better player ... yes?
