Be very cautious using sandpaper on reeds. A swipe in the wrong place will tend to create leaks.
Also, much better to trim ears off immediately after removing cane from the shaper. This allows the reed to set itself during the tie & to get sides which are more parallel. Of course, the reed should be tied/clipped open immediately after shaping as well, then left to sit a day or so, before beginning the scrape. In my experience, it is never good to shape/tie/scrape in one sitting. Echoing Cheryl Wefler & Theresa De La Plain here, who IMHO have written superb books on oboe reed making/adjustment.
