Since I bought a Minidisc recorder nearly ten years ago, my tapes have been collecting dust.

But feeler gauges (cigarette paper or audio tape) will miss is small imperfections in pads and bedplace crowns which can only be seen, and they won't detect leaking reed sockets or 8ve inserts.

Test the top joint with no keys fitted, but plug all the toneholes (and the middle of the 8ve inserts) with Blu-Tack, block the tenon end with either Blu-Tack or a wet finger and suck the air out from the reed socket and seal it with your lip. You should be able to get a vacuum that pulls your lip into the reed socket, and should hold for at least 30 seconds.

If the vacuum holds for les than 5 seconds, you have a leak somehwere - it cold be the 8ve inserts which should be removed with a special tool with two prongs that fit in the insert, the well cleaned out with a cotton bud and the insert cleaned (the vent hole should be 0.7mm to 0.75mm) by dipping in acid to remove mineral deposits, washed in water to neutralise the acid, dried thoroughly and repaced with cork grease on the threads to seal it in. Once tightened, check the hole isn't blocked with grease and repeat the suction test.

If there's still a leak, the reed socket could be leaking - so you need to remove it and refit it. If it is loose, a tightly fitting reed (not your best one!) will make it shift. Either use shellac or epoxy to glue it back in with, and make sure the top of the bore/base of the reed socket isn't blocked or occluded - a 3.9mm reamer or twist drill going in from the reed socket will clear this.
