Thanks Chris, this is an eye-opener for me!

All of the repair guys who have replaced pads for me in the past have done this or similar to make the pad sit. Admittedly, it was always done after placing the pad correctly and checking for correct seating all the way round. They said it was to make sure the cork took an impression of the crown.

I'm a wiser man.
