Hooray, it's not cracks in the wood, what a relief :-)
my repair guy called back, apparently G pad is unseated, heavier pressure closes OK (G played OK, never noticed it as culprit) but more delicate pressure (hint hint) leaks like a sieve
Left 3 is a tricky finger to tame, must be too heavy on G in compensation for less than optimum muscle strength in finger, and also inconsistent with finger pressure on that particular key
interesting that a bit of leakage is considered normal, so maybe home-made 'failed' suction tests are generally inconclusive? But, if i'd known that first, i wouldn't have realised there was something wrong after all ...
