It is pretty rare to find the key of F# in classical music, but I would say at least once a season I have something in orchestra in that key. However, when I do shows (musicals/opera) it is not at all unusual to have F#, C#, Cb, B, etc (think all yucky keys including minor and weirdo modal stuff); and often for only 4 bars on the fly to another yucky key. THAT is when you are so glad you did all those boring scales and arpeggio exercises - because you got the book 4 days before opening night and you have exactly 0 free hours to practice!
