I've just watched the San Francisco SO on telly doing Ives, Strauss (Salome) and Shostakovitch 5th.

Is it usual for American oboists to play with the oboe pointing very much downwards and with curved wrists and elbows in? Doesn't look very comfortable - almost cramped. In fact, the clarinettists held their clarinets at a much higher playing angle which is usually the opposite way round when watching some UK and European orchestral players. And is this posture adopted because of Tabuteau's influence among American players?

In the UK we're generally taught to play holding the oboe up and out in front, drop the wrists and hold the elbows out (see Alexei Ogrintchouk playing), even while seated.
