there are two main modern oboe systems.
The most used is the french model, known as conservatory model. It was developped at the end of the 19th century by the Triebert family, in Paris (later, Francois Loree herited the factory, and actually, the De Gourdon family is the owner of Loree oboes). There are some variatons as the full automatic system, the english system (with thumbplate system) and the Pestini system (AFAIK).

The other system is the Vienoise Oboe, played almost only in Viena, Austria, a natural developpement of the baroque oboe. I've read some days ago that there would be only 30 o 40 Vienoise oboe players, among profesionals and studentes.
