Hi Dutchy --
According to my teacher, the left thumb is to always be either on the back of the oboe or on the octave key, as the note being played warrants. Per her instruction, it is never to be suspended in midair.
Because I came to the oboe from the clarinet, this was a habit that I had to consciously develop. Playing the clarinet, there are times when the thumb must be suspended in midair, and so I began playing the oboe with my left thumb flapping in the breeze, unless I needed the octave key.
You got it right the first time!
Susan
