One thing you haven't said here is whether or not you are intending to be a music performance major at the collegiate level. If so, my gut feeling is that this would demand depth at one instrument, rather than breadth at several. Although I have heard that there is a school somewhere that is offering a major in "doubling" -- great idea, actually.
Having said that, I suppose it is really never "too late" to make the ultimate switch, to the instrument you wanted in the first place. Your motivation to play it well will make up a good deal of the distance between where you are now and where you will need to be a year from now. But, DO get some lessons! The oboe embouchure is not particularly intuitive (by which I mean to say, if you approach it by doing what comes naturally, you will more than likely be doing it wrong -- the voice of experience speaking here).
Good luck to you.
