I've fitted nylon inserts in the ends of some keys on one of my clarinets (on keys mounted between point screws), and yesterday I saw a Puchner bassoon with nylon bearings in the ends of keys mounted between point screws. Leblanc put teflon bearings in the ends of point screw mounted keys a while back, but I think they discontinued it after a few years.
The problem with fitting shims in between keys mounted on steels is that they're easy to get lost or mixed up during disassembly, and swaging is a more permanent fixture. After swaging (and key barrels should be swaged so they're slightly too long), fraise the ends of the key barrels to provide a smooth bearing surface against the adjacent key barrel or pillar.
