i think i know exactly the part in New World you're talking about - was it near the end of the second movement? I recall there is a quick switch from 2nd oboe to english horn right there before the last reprise of the ehorn theme. so makes sense, since the oboe part isn't very exposed in any case.

I also find that the high c# is a very weak note relative to the high D. Is that right or is that just the horn i'm playing?
