Thanks for all the insights.
From time to time, I get the urge to try to learn how to make reeds, but then I run into a good pre-made reed, and the urge passes. I am not a particularly dexterous person, and I can imagine having no end of trouble getting the mechanics of tying on and scraping under control. Not to mention nicks and cuts on my fingers.
I recently bought some reeds that have a different scrape than what I started out with. I started out with reeds that had a fairly complex looking scrape, with two "windows" on each side and a definite spine and an upside-down v- or u-shaped tip scrape. Some were good, some weren't. I think this is the so-called "American" scrape, am I right?
I got some (from Ebay, believe it or not) recently that were just a plain, simple, more-or-less straight-across scraped tip, with no obvious windows, or spine, or anything. They are really very, very good reeds, handmade and economically priced. Is this the "French" scrape, or what? They are somewhat less resistant than the more complex ones. I really like them better than the others.
And, BTW, I am TRYING to find a teacher, but where I live (deep East Central Ohio boonies), that is more easily wished for than accomplished.
