Not surprising that it sounds more restricted longer -- your opening is then at a narrower part of the cane. I suppose another thing you could try is a larger opening gauge (smaller diameter -- e.g. 10-10.5). Finally, why not just tie it at the recommended length and just make the tip long enough to suit you (w/ total length still 71-72).
