There are a few synthetic pads used by makers - Norbek pads which are silicon rubber faced and have a composite cork backing (used on Ludwig Frank oboes), and Eddie Aston 'Supapads' which have a neoprene facing on a cork backing (used on bassoons and Eaton clarinets), and also Valentino pads - the white 'Greenback' ones are better than the brown fake cork ones.

I used to use Pisoni high density white foam pads on student Howarth oboes when I first started - they worked very well and were silent, though they were easily compressed. But we stopped using them as there must have been a problem early on in manufacture of the foam that caused large surface bubbles making them leak.

I might ask our MD to do that this evening - and don the ear defenders!
