When we test joints, the (low) pressure line goes into the reed socket and the tenon is stopped with a rubber bung. The perforated fingerplates are sealed with Blu-Tack and the holes closed by finger pressure.

When fully airtight (I check the gauge before testing the joint by putting a kink in the hose), the readout drops to 0 which means no air is escaping. So a figure as near to 0 as possible is what to aim for. If it's over 1, then there's a leak.
