Oboes can have poor seal and still play well, so it's not just the number of seconds the top joint can hold the vacuum.

I study with Oboist (a member of this forum...) and he showed me that it is better to hold the top joint in reverse, blocking the reed entry with a wet finger: this way no air comes inside through the smaller and airtight hole. Also, you suck in the natural direction in which the air is flowing into the instrument when it is actually played.
