What do you guys do to deal with these guys? (or girls for that matter)
Sometimes my conductor calls on people if they make mistakes, which is fine...but sometimes he can be pretty nasty about it.
Such was the case today, and I was the unlucky party. I played a wrong note. For some reason this also warranted comments on how I got the assistant oboe to do the tuning (because she was ready to go, as she had already been playing the 1st half of the rehearsal, whereas I had to run in and whip everything out. )
"For heaven sakes you're the principal, you need to learn how to do the job...etc"
Not that tuning comments are entirely unjustified...but is it necessary to address something like that in front of the whole orchestra? Maybe I'm overly-sensitive...but it was quite the kick to the self-esteem.
And you all thought reeds were the worst thing...
