Re: How do I find out about a Larilee? Also ideas for new student?

Chris,

Thanks for the explanation. My daughter read it and said that, if it's for altissimo, that probably won't be something she needs to worry about for a time.

Chris and everyone else who was so kind to respond to me,
We are somewhat strapped for cash, having purchased two cars last year to replace one with 115,000 miles on it and one that had a $3,000 repair estimate after two solid years of expensive repairs. I just went back to work part-time, after our youngest started kindergarten in the fall, so we aren't really in a position to buy a good oboe. This oboe that we got is $853. We can return it as of tomorrow, but it's looking more and more like we got a really good oboe for the amount we could afford.

There's a woman in our church choir who plays oboe, and she has offered to teach our daughter. We wouldn't have to afford weekly lessons.

My daughter has played the oboe for probably four hours since she got home from school on Friday. We have a $77 repair estimate on it to make the keys less squishy and to replace some pads. The repair guy helped me buy a $300 trombone for our son and a $50 clarinet for our daughter. Anyway, one more question I have is this: for a wood oboe, how do we take care of it? It has one crack which is about 1/2 inch long and went through. Other than that, the repair guy said there were no cracks and no pins. He had thought the clarinet was worth about $800. He thought this oboe was worth about $1,200. I'm going to be asking him about taking care of the oboe, but I'd also appreciate if anyone here has any advice on it.

Thanks again for your help in educating me. My daughter had to register for 8th grade classes on Thursday, and she told me last week she wanted to drop out of Band for a year so she could learn oboe. I've had a very short period of time to try to figure out if this is feasible. Now she is registered for classes, we have an oboe, and we just need to figure out how to care for it and where to buy reeds for it. I did look on the reed recommendation site and Katherine Needleman reeds came out at the highest rating, but I couldn't figure out how to buy them, so that would be another question.

So -- I'm left with two questions:
1) Any tips on care of a wood oboe?
2) Where do we buy Katharine Needleman oboe reeds?
Thanks.
