I find the pitch of the reed crow very important to know when the reed will play up to pitch. Individul note varaiations in tuning still may exist but that is a different matter.

You can watch the tuner just like you do for checking notes on the oboe.

You want the reed crow to be a c... and to play it w/o having to bite the reed up to pitch.

Some prefer to measure this pitch by placing the reed far into the embouchure so the lips are on the reed thread.

That way you are not biting the reed to influence its basic pitch.

Now and then a reed just hangs low in pitch. So, try this with several reeds and you will see each reed tends to be different.

(All this will make more sense with time and practice. It is very desirable to work with a good teacher to get your embouchure and wind going properly as early as possible in your playing career. Bad habits there are very hard to fix later. Good habits there are easy to establish early given good instruction.)
