At this early stage, most beginners will be playing on the flat side until the embouchure muscles have strengthened. So it's normal at the moment to be slightly flat.

But even so, there are several factors that contribute to playing flat, and most of it's down to the reed.

Some long 'W' scrape reeds will play easily in the low register, but on the flat side due to the length of the scrape (where the bark has been removed).

Also, if the reed has opened up at the tip after soaking or playing so the aperture between the blades is wide, this can cause it to play flat.
