That reminds me of something one of my teachers did out of concern for leaching out the good reed stuff as it dissolved into the soaking water.

He'd noticed better results after using the same, rather nasty water several days, then decided to try somthing.

He'd soak a bunch of gouge ribbons for a while, essentially make a reed tea, and then soak the cane he was going to work on.

Idea was the water would becomce saturated with reed stuff and lose its ability to act as a solvent while still working to soak the cane.

And he got to changing it pretty regularly out of concern for microbes growing, but found changing the reed tea every couple days worked well.

A smaller portion can be set aside into a shot glass for working on reeds going into the mouth and changed more frequently. It can be taken to rehearsel in a small container.

I gotta start doing this again.

Still think I'm a nut...?
