Craig, you're such a nut.

In any case, that might work, but I've seen studies where even remote cases of alcohol left on reeds such as traces of beer mixed in with saliva show that they deteriorate the organic material in the reed much more quickly than normal water or saliva.

Remember: it's the cloudy stuff left in the water when we soak our cane too long that is the "good stuff" that fills the pores of the cane and makes it sound well. Using cane that has soaked to long and no longer has those nutrients often ends up hard, and brittle sounding. Alcohol would probably melt that stuff out of the pores.
