... hm, thinking about corner clips some more, instead of looking at perspective of narrowing the aperture, look at question from perspective of the tip's sides
if sides of tip are 5mm long and centre of tip that's responsively thin is 3mm -- clipping off tip corners would be shortening the 5 mm sides about 1mm, as well as narrow the tip to the woodier centre line, so that would essentially 'stiffen' up the tip if it's too easy and/or too flat, but wouldn't be helpful if tip sufficiently resistant already ... ?
maybe it's a technique that more appropriately belongs in 'fixing' rather than 'construction' category ... ?
