thanks everybody for your help. Chris, I tried adjusting the F# resonance key (apparently same two screws as on oboe), and while it didn't hurt anything it didn't help either. I am suspecting it might be a reed issue after all. I played an ancient 1 1/2 year old reed a little while ago and had no problem, so I think I need to do a little tinkering with the knife. It was just such a strange problem to have, since in 30 years playing on a bazillion different reeds, I have never had this happen on oboe.
