For my European scrape reed (10.5mm diameter cane), i tie until the staple length, if both sides or one side of the cane closes before my thread reaches the staple length, i readjust the position of the piece of cane until satisfactory. (difficult to elaborate through words due to my poor vocabulary, sorry!)
I use 46 or 47mm staples of various brands. Depending on staple length my tied reeds (before cutting off the tip) would be 75mm for 47mm staples and 74mm for 46mm staples vice versa.
As i am a beginner i am still unaware of what is best for me. I suspect a wider shape to be good but now i am using a very small shaper from an unknown manufacturer at -1.
Post tie procedures would be to use sand paper and water to very slightly adjust the the shape/contour of the sides of the reeds so they would 'blend' more into the staple tip. After that i leave them overnight for the shape to settle before i do any scraping.
Special procedures:
As shown in German oboist Michael Untch's reed making photographs book, i also add an extra process of rounding the end of the cane to the shape of the staple tip with wire, although i do not heat up my staple but instead tie the cane to a mandrel and tie one circle and continuosly turn the mandrel and forward and backwards making the sides of the cane open and close, adding and releasing tension so that it rounds. The point which i tie is the staple tip length.
