If they can't be seen, then you might as well just have a CD playing.
If the musician or musicians can be seen, the punters prefer it - I played with a wind 5tet made up of Royal Marines, Navy and a couple of civvy musicians (myself and the flautist) for a dinner in a house in the Navy base just before Christmas, even though the guests weren't in the same room (but in an adjacent one) they did come round to hear us - but with this situation as well as playing in restaraunts the atmosphere is very relaxed, so you could almost treat it as a rehearsal as the audience isn't expecting a formal concert.
