Norman Lebrecht thinks it's dying. Check out his book "Who Killed Classical Music" (Known outside the US as "When the Music Stops" ).
I read that book when I was a freshman at the Rubin Acadmy of Music, some nine years ago. Well, Classical Music is not quite dead right now, though the times are a little worse for it perhaps. Too many rival genres, I suppose, and too little music education.
Anyway, Baron, if you have doubts that you'll have a job in the future as an Oboist in an Orchestra, it's better to cast them aside.
The kids in your class don't seem to appreciate Classical Music? Their problem - or maybe you'd like to try and explain it nicely to them (they might come to the next concert, y'know). However, you're in a field where it's pretty hard to find social approval (at least in my experience...) but you don't play Oboe in order to be popular, right?
