I have not had much success with the nail file tehnique so far and, like d-oboe prefers, try for clarity in my tone. I tend to play medium hard cane and my friend who does the Bart Simpson's head effect uses very hard cane.

I do like to scrape the extreme tip thinner than I used to scrape about 1/2 mm with my knife now instead of silicon paper as I did for many years. It is a finishing step in the process done when things are very close to fininshed.

It makes the reeds a bit more responsive and actually brings the pitch up a bit.

I do clip the tip with a knife though. I think I'll try the razor blade and see how it differs from using a knife.
