i clip with a razor blade. I also clip my blades different lengths, clipping it on a chopping block first. Then I try the reed, putting the reed in with one blade up, then the other to determine if one side sounds better up. If I find the better side facing up, then I stick the plaque in the reed, and cut the bottom blade TINY TINY TINY bit shorter with a razor blade. We're talking like... hairthick small. Usually by looking you can't tell which side is longer, but can feel it with your tongue.
This darkens the reed a bit, (not nearly like the bart simpson haircut though), but takes away a minute bit of response.
